Scaling the warehouse network behind a wind energy operation

The challenge

A leading renewable energy manufacturer needed a logistics partner capable of supporting the rapid growth of its North American wind energy operations. The company required end-to-end support across ocean freight, warehousing, inventory management, domestic transportation, and final-mile delivery to more than 30 wind farm sites across the U.S. and Canada.

The operation also involved time-critical turbine replacement parts, oversized major components, and specialized storage requirements all while improving visibility, reducing operational complexity, and lowering overall costs.

The solution

SGL designed and scaled a customized logistics network to support the customer’s evolving supply chain. Starting with one facility in Dallas, SGL expanded operations to include facilities in Houston and Toronto, with a new crane-equipped facility in Montreal currently underway.

SGL implemented warehousing technology with barcode scanning and inventory visibility, managed over 16,000 SKUs, procured dedicated transportation networks for expedited turbine-offline shipments, and developed specialized handling solutions for oversized windmill components using gantry crane-equipped facilities.

By identifying opportunities to regionalize distribution and reduce unnecessary cross-border movement, SGL helped simplify the customer’s supply chain while improving speed, visibility, and operational efficiency.

The results

The partnership evolved from traditional transportation support into a fully integrated 4PL-style relationship managing warehousing, transportation, inventory visibility, and specialized project logistics.

The customer achieved approximately 7.5% warehousing cost savings while improving transparency, inventory accuracy, and operational efficiency. Technicians gained faster access to critical parts, reducing downtime risk for wind turbines where delays can result in significant financial penalties.

Most importantly, the customer gained a strategic partner capable of handling highly specialized logistics challenges in-house removing complexity so their team could stay focused on manufacturing and supporting renewable energy growth.
