Be aware of the Brown marmorated stink bug when transporting to Australia

12 Sep, 2018

From 1 September 2018 to 30 April 2019 increased import measures will be taken in order to lower the risk of the Brown marmorated stink bug in Australia.

The stink bug is not yet found in Australia, but due to its damaging nature, the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources in Australia is taking precautions to continuously keep it away.

The Brown marmorated stink bug often seeks inside warmer areas, in order to hide from the cold weather outside and can therefore be found in shipped cargo as well as containers.

Several countries will be subject to heightened seasonal surveillance and treatment requirements. These countries are:

  • Italy
  • United States of America
  • France
  • Georgia
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Romania
  • Russia

Goods arriving to Australia is predefined as either risk goods or high risk goods depending on the classification and based on this certain measures will be taken when the goods arrive to Australia.
