Ocean Freight Sweden achieves up to 86.9% CO2 reduction on FCL container shipments

Johan Söderström, Skaraslättens Åkeri - Malin Horn, Ocean Project Lead LCL & Rail Sweden, SGL - Martin Agnemark, Procurement Pricing Manager, SGL

When Scan Global Logistics' (SGL) Ocean Freight team in Sweden announced their goal to power all first- and final-mile container deliveries with biofuel, it was a bold commitment. Two years later, that promise has been fulfilled and verified: An 86.9% CO2 reduction through the switch to HVO100 biofuel offers our ocean freight customers a concrete, measurable solution they can include in their own CO2 emissions reports.

Malin Melander, Ocean Freight Manager, elaborates on the solution, which has been independently verified by the third-party auditor, C1 Certification.

‘We now have a verified solution that customers can incorporate into their own Scope 3 emissions reports. The solution is part of our ongoing investments in sustainable solutions and reflects our commitment to collaborate with our customers on developing solutions to achieve their climate targets.’

From commitment to certification and real reductions

In early 2022, the goal was clear: replace conventional diesel with HVO100 — a renewable, fossil-free fuel derived from hydrotreated vegetable oil — on all container pickup and deliveries in Sweden.

The aim was to reduce between 150 and 200 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, with a CO2 reduction target of 60-80%.

The first official verification from C1 Certification confirmed a reduction of 172 tonnes, equal to an 86.9% reduction in emissions from deliveries handled by Skaraslättens Transport, based on 2024 volumes. This result highlights the achievements of just one of our network hauliers, indicating that our ambitious goal has already been surpassed across the entire network.

Johan Söderström, CCO, Skaraslättens Transport, discusses the importance of this partnership:

‘For us, sustainability goes beyond just fuels – it's about taking responsibility. Scan Global Logistics is a partner that shares our long-term vision, transparency, and commitment to continuous improvement.' He continues:

Together, we have driven real change, and the results speak for themselves: An 86.9% reduction in emissions, thanks to the exclusive use of HVO100 on all our transports.

The solution is verified through C1-certified third-party audits, and we will continue to work in partnership to decarbonise the supply chain and drive impactful, long-term solutions.

The project began in collaboration with Skaraslätten Transport in selected regions. It now covers ocean freight final-mile FCL deliveries across all of Sweden. This makes the trucking biofuel solution available to more customers than ever. Additionally, LCL and FCL customers can opt for ocean biofuel to reduce their ocean emissions.

Success built on a close haulier partnership
Order Nordic, a valued customer, expands on the partnership and the wide range of low-carbon logistics solutions available to support their sustainable journey:

‘Sustainability is a big part of how we work, and being able to contribute locally is important to us. That’s why we’re glad to collaborate with Scan Global Logistics, who not only use verified HVO100 but also operates an electric truck right here in Helsingborg. Since our warehouse is based in the same city, it’s great that our deliveries can now move through town without adding emissions. It's a smart, concrete step toward a lower climate footprint, and a great example of how local partnerships can drive real change. We're proud to be part of it.’

Like Order Nordic, a growing number of customers consider sustainability a must. Therefore, SGL continuously invests in this area to support its customers' climate targets by adding more solutions to the portfolio, such as the electric truck solution and ocean biofuel.

Today, customers choosing ocean freight with SGL in Sweden benefit from:

Up to 86.9% CO2 reduction verified through independent certification on first and last mile

Verified CO2 emissions report for customers’ own Scope 3 reporting

HVO100 counts as real CO2 reductions towards reaching your climate targets

Ocean biofuel options available for FCL and LCL

The project’s success has depended on strong partnerships across the entire value chain, which has now been expanded throughout Sweden. To secure the increasing supply needs, an exchange system was set up so that whenever HVO100 was not available in one region, equivalent volumes would be filled elsewhere.

Malin Melander finishes: ‘The transition to HVO100 is now a standard, proven offering, empowering our customers to take actionable steps towards their climate targets. This certification reinforces our commitment to decarbonising the supply chain and proves that this is more than just talk: it’s a tangible, impactful solution that’s easy to implement. And this is just the beginning.’
