Flooding in Thailand

21 Sep, 2011

At the moment, Thailand is experiencing a major natural disaster with flood water devastating 60 provinces out of 77 in the country.

Worst in 50 years!

This is the worst flooding Thailand has experienced in more than 50 years! The flood is the consequence of 2 months heavy rain and run-off caused by 3 major storms/typhoons, which crossed Vietnam and China and dumped large volumes of rain onto the mountains in Thailand’s Northern areas. This run-off can only find its way out to the ocean via the river systems, and unfortunately, all the major river systems run through the very flat areas of central Thailand.

Damages and casualties

The flood water has swept over industrial estates surrounding Bangkok’s northern areas and damages are estimated to be 120 billion Thai Baht (approx. 3.2 Billion USD). Casualties as a consequence of the flood, has reached up 300 people.

Bangkok currently impassable

Bangkok was on path of the flood water and we were expecting to be hit over last weekend, but strong floodgates and defences prevented the water from entering the inner city. However, large areas of north of Bangkok are now under up to 2 meter of water. Most highways out of Bangkok to the north are currently impassable.

Back to normal – at least a month

The government expects the water to recede in a month time and the priority of the government is now to deliver the needed help to those people affected by the flood. However, we would like to ask for your patience and understanding as the city and its infrastructures are logistically challenged during this period.
