When a large clothing retailer plans to open a high-end retail location, the coordination required to transport construction materials to the site requires attention to detail, shipment scanning, and milestone reporting. Having successfully worked with us on two previous store openings, the customer invited our team to their 2024 RFP, where we were selected to assist in transporting the construction materials for a new store opening in Frisco, TX.
Challenge
Store openings can vary in complexity. A store opening requiring building materials to construct a physical store has a more complex level of coordination than the delivery of gondolas and other retail fixtures. For our retail customer, the latter was not the case. With a 5-month timeline and estimated 25 ocean containers and 28 air shipments, our team supported a new store opening by recovering materials from the Houston port and Dallas airport, brought them to our SGL warehouse in Dallas, TX, and then delivered to the site location in stages according to the construction plan.
Solution
Our team meticulously coordinated air & ocean recovery from the airport and port to deliver specific materials to the new store location. Each step of the way, from shipments shipped to our facility in Dallas, TX, to scanning materials to track milestones as required by the customer, we made sure to account for every detail. Our teams tracked when shipments arrived at the warehouse, were staged for pickup, loaded on delivery trucks, and delivered – this information was critical to reporting, which was done weekly, even daily at times as required. Throughout the project's timeline, specific materials shipped from the warehouse to the new store location per the construction crew's request. Our team coordinated with the construction crew directly and reported to the customer with status updates along the way.
Results
Deliveries were not just on time but also damage-free, aiding in constructing this new store according to the construction plan. Overall, the team delivered 25 containers (600 pieces) weighing 175,000 kg to the store site. The team also delivered 28 air shipments (115 pieces) weighing 10,000 kg. Coordinating the shipment of materials according to the construction plans gave the customer a sense of security and peace of mind that we would handle all the project details from recovery to delivery.
